Report on the 4:th International Lithosymposium
in Tidaholm, Sweden 2002.

Friday August 2

Graphic art in Berlin and French stones
Master printer Jürgen Prasse who together with his
collegue Klaus Büscher runs the printshop Tabor-
presse in Berlin told the audience about the situation
for graphic art in Germany today. Jürgen showed
slides from the workshop and described the activity.
He also showed a video from the quarry in the south
of France where you find the highest quality of litho
stones. The video also showed the Pousse-Calliou
workshop, one of the finest litho workshops in France.

An American perspective
William Haberman, artist from USA, made a lecture
about his large graphic experience from different
workshops in the USA. William who lives in Sweden
since a couple of years also showed slides of
contemporary prints made at Rutgers University
in New Jersey. Finally he pushed for the big conference
on graphic art that will take place in USA in 2004.

A russian perspective
Artist Olga Belooussova, teacher at the Academy of
Fine Art in St. Petersburg, made a lecture on the
situation for graphic art in Russia and especially in
St. Petersburg. Olga has been in contact with the
Academy of Fine Art in Stockholm for some time and
guest teachers from Stockholm has been in St. Peters-
burg. There is a very fine and very old tradition of litho-
graphic printmaking in St. Petersburg but the printers
are old and there are very few young artists behind
them. As a result workshops have disappeared. In the
last few years however students from the Academy
have established a workshop and the interest in
lithographic art has increased. The workshop is
very out-turned with a gallery and activities for
children. The artists at the workshop are very inte-
rested in exchanges with other workshops.

Workshops
The German artist Dieter Haase showed his asphalt-
scraping technics. The method starts with a covering
asphalt surface in which the image is engraved. Best
result is obtained by using self made asphaltum.
1 part asphaltum powder and 4 parts turpentine which
is boiled in 4 hours.

In the following workshop William Haberman, USA,
showed examples from his ways of working. Many
of the newly invented methods in lithographic print-
making derive from experimental work done in the
USA, especially at the Tamarind Institute for Lithogra-
phy in New Mexico. From the highly advanced edu-
cation system at Tamarind one examines what is
probably the best printers in the world. William who
is trained at Tamarind of course had a lot to talk about.

Agatha Christie from Berlin
Friday night the German actress Nicole Haase from
Berlin, appeared on the pub stage with two small
stories by Agatha Christie. The texts ended in a
suprising way to the delight of the audience.

Friday was also the last evening for the highly prized
pub which had been opened for the participaters
of the symposium during the first week.
